Small studio or big agency? How to choose the right design partner

Full disclosure: I run a small studio, so you can guess which side I'm on. But I spent ten years in-house and around agencies before starting Kape, and honestly, both have their place. Here's an honest look at the trade-offs.

Why work with a small studio

You get the person you hired. With a small studio, the person you meet is usually the person doing the work. No hand-offs to a junior designer you've never met.

More attention. Fewer clients means more time and care for each one. Your project isn't one of fifty on someone's list.

More flexible. Plans change. Deadlines move. A small studio can usually adjust quickly without a lot of process getting in the way.

Clearer pricing. Pricing tends to be straightforward, and there's often more room to shape the scope around your budget.

Why work with a big agency

More people, more skills. Big agencies have specialists for everything: strategy, copy, video, development, media buying. If you need all of that at once, that's a real advantage.

Bigger capacity. If you've got a massive campaign or several big projects running at the same time, an agency can put a whole team on it.

Dedicated project management. Larger agencies usually have project managers keeping everything on track, which helps on complex projects with lots of moving parts.

The trade-off is usually cost, less flexibility, and more layers between you and the people doing the work.

So which one is right for you?

Ask yourself:

  • How big and complex is the project?

  • What's your budget?

  • How involved do you want to be?

  • Do you want a partner who knows your business inside out, or a big team you can scale up and down?

For a lot of small and mid-size businesses, a small studio hits the sweet spot: senior-level work, a direct relationship and a price that makes sense. That's exactly why I started Kape.

If that sounds like what you're looking for, let's talk.
