Brand storytelling: why people buy the story before the product
Think about the last brand you bought from without comparing prices. Chances are you liked something about them that had nothing to do with the product. Maybe it was the founder, maybe it was why they started, maybe they just felt like your kind of people.
That's brand storytelling. And it's not a marketing trick. It's just giving people a reason to care.
Why your story matters more than your feature list
Your customers see hundreds of ads a day. Most of them blur together. The ones that stick are the ones that make you feel something, even for a second.
A good story turns "another company that does X" into "the company that does X because of Y." That "because" is what people remember.
What makes a brand story actually work
It's true. People can smell fake from a mile away. Your story should come from your real values and the real reason you do this. If it wouldn't hold up in a conversation over coffee, it won't hold up online either.
It's about them, not just you. The best stories put the customer in the picture. What problem were they stuck with? What changes for them when they work with you?
It makes people feel something. Relief, excitement, a bit of nostalgia, the feeling of being understood. You don't need to make anyone cry. You just need them to feel like you get it.
How to find yours
Start with a few honest questions:
Why did you start this business? The real answer, not the website answer.
What do you do differently from the people down the street?
What do your favourite clients say about you when you're not in the room?
What do you want people to feel after working with you?
Write the answers down the way you'd say them out loud. That's usually 80% of your story right there.
Then use it everywhere
Your story shouldn't live only on your About page. It should show up in your website copy, your social posts, your pitch decks, even how you answer the phone. When it's consistent, people start to recognize you before they even see your logo.
If you're not sure what your story is, or you know it but can't get it into words, that's exactly the kind of thing I love helping with. Let's chat.
